PNU Achieves ‘Triple Crown’ in Major Government University Innovation Programs
As PNU celebrates its 80th anniversary, Pusan National University has achieved top-level results across three major Korean government initiatives in 2026 focused on university innovation and regional talent development, marking a “Triple Crown.”
PNU received an S rating, the highest rating, for the second consecutive year in the Ministry of Education’s National University Development Project performance evaluation. In addition, the Busan regional ANCHOR initiative, which includes PNU, also earned the highest S rating in the government’s annual review. Combined with PNU’s recent selection for the 2026 Growth Engine & AI Package Support Program for Flagship National Universities, the results further reinforce the University’s role as a key platform for advancing education and research innovation, regional industry development, and balanced national growth.
Looking more closely at each achievement, PNU once again received the highest ranking—S rank in the 2026 National University Development Project performance evaluation, conducted by the Ministry of Education and the National Research Foundation of Korea, following its top evaluation in 2025. As a result, PNU secured a total project budget of KRW 42.2 billion, including KRW 31.4 billion in additional performance-based incentives, the highest amount among participating flagship national universities. PNU received this high evaluation in recognition of its systematic efforts to link its mid- to long-term development plan, PNU VISION 2035, with its National University Development Project innovation plan. Based on this strategic planning, the University established the PNU PRIMER five-year innovation strategy and has continued to advance reforms in education and research.
Meanwhile, the Busan regional talent development initiative, involving PNU and 19 other universities in the region, also achieved the highest evaluation. Busan received an S rating in the Ministry of Education’s 2026 Annual Review of the Regional Growth Talent Development System (ANCHOR), based on a comprehensive assessment of its 2025 performance, including implementation structure, governance, individual project outcomes, and overall project management.
PNU was also selected on September 1 for the government’s 2026 Growth Engine & AI Package Support Program for Flagship National Universities. From 2026 to 2030, PNU will receive KRW 290 billion through the Growth Engine & AI Package itself. Together with funding from the National University Development Project, ANCHOR, and related government initiatives, PNU is expected to receive more than KRW 500 billion in government support over five years.
With this support, PNU will pursue its vision of becoming a platform for transforming Korea’s spatial and industrial landscape through AX innovation in manufacturing and maritime industries. Its major initiatives include:
1. Establishing the College of Innovative Manufacturing and Maritime Industry
2. Launching the Strategic Industries AX Convergence Research Institute
3. Establishing a new College of AI
4. Developing a shared university system across the Busan–Gyeongnam region
Through these three major achievements, PNU is strengthening its position as a national flagship university leading education and research innovation, regional talent development, industrial AI transformation, and balanced national growth.
