The Department of German Language Education was established in 1971 as the German Language Major, in the Department of Foreign Language Education of the College of Education. It was separated to become the Department of German Language Education in 1982. The German Language Education Major was established in the Graduate School of Education, and the Master’s and the Doctorate programs in German Language Education have been operated at general graduate schools since 1998.
The department aims to generate capable and creative German language teachers who can contribute to the development of the humanities in Korea in the 21st century, based on a theoretical and practical knowledge of German language education and German linguistics. The department also enables its students to become scholars or experts in German studies who can contribute to the development of the local community, the nation, and the world.
Considering this educational objective, the department operates an educational curriculum that fully reflects the needs of learners, and develops capable experts who can proactively respond to the needs of the era of globalization and informatization. In addition to the required general courses and elective general courses, which provide the basic knowledge needed for specialized academic research, the department operates required basic courses, required major courses, and elective major courses for students wishing to become teachers of the German language. As the department also operates a double major program and a second major program, its graduates can serve as German language teachers.
