PNU establishes specialized campus belt PNU establishes specialized campus belt

Pusan National University successfully integrated with Miryang University in March 2006, which not only introduced an innovative management process of the college but also created a successful model for reform and restructuring. Currently, PNU is gaining momentum to its efforts to specialize each of its campuses.

Building on its successful integration with Miryang University, PNU has established a belt of specialized campuses that encompasses Pusan, Yangsan, and Miryang, in order to further solidify its position as the think-tank of Southeast Asia. In particular, PNU has established a strategy to specialize each campus, under which the Busan Campus is a research-oriented hub, the Yangsan Campus is a global healthcare hub, and the Miryang Campus is a nanotechnology and biotechnology stronghold.

As part of the initiative to foster the Busan Campus as a research-oriented campus, PNU has established plans to modernize facilities. One such plan is the "classroom innovation plan" that was initiated in 2006, under which the classrooms on campus were gradually transformed into state-of-the-art e-learning rooms. Over the last three years, all classrooms have adopted cutting-edge equipment in the pursuit of a comprehensive e-learning system, and these changes have strengthened PNU's commitment to making its Busan Campus a research-oriented campus.

Since the construction of Pusan National University Yangsan Hospital in June 2005, many healthcare facilities, including the College Hospital, the Children's Hospital, the Dental Hospital, the Nursing Center, and the Hospital of Oriental Medicine, have been constructed at the Yangsan Campus in a step-by-step manner. Some wards of Yangsan Hospital were opened in November 2008. In particular, the construction of buildings for the School of Medicine, the School of Dentistry, the School of Oriental Medicine, and the College of Nursing were completed, and lectures and research activities were initiated here in March 2009.

Both the College of Nano Science and Technology and the College of Biological Sciences are located at the Miryang Campus. The campus has also established a joint research center in cooperation with Fraunhofer Institute for Interfacial Engineering and Biotechnology (IGB), a world-renowned research institute in the field of bio-engineering.

In addition, the establishment of the College of Nano Science and Technology by PNU represents the largest commitment by any Korean university to the field of nanotechnology, as all other universities in Korea that offer this major provide it at the department level, rather than at the college level. The college aims to foster experts in the field of nano science and technology, and focuses on providing specialized education through inter-disciplinary studies, a strong nanotechnology infrastructure, and on-the-job training to nurture professionals in nano science and technology. In addition to these efforts, PNU has worked to strengthen its College of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, which will serve as one of the University’s growth engines in the 21st century, efforts which are already beginning to bear fruit.

Through the specialization of each campus, PNU has laid a solid foundation on which to strengthen its global competitiveness. It is currently striving to develop its Yangsan Campus into a global healthcare hub, based on its successful track record of hosting and opening the School of Oriental Medicine, the only one of its kind at a university in Korea.
